International Festival

Dear Parents,
Save the date for the Caraway International Festival which will be on January 22nd.

At the festival you will find tables hosted by fellow Caraway parents sharing their culture by exhibiting cultural artifacts such as traditional clothing or by providing samples of ethnic foods or by teaching crafts or games related to their culture. The evening will end with a fashion show where parents and students can show off their traditional outfits.

So far parents have signed up to share bits of India, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Greece, Germany, Ireland, France and the United States. I encourage all cultures at Caraway Elementary to consider participating in the International Festival.  It is a great way to introduce your culture to the community.

If you would like to assist with representing these countries or adding your culture to the list please send an email to hannapog@gmail.com.

The planning meeting has been moved to the school to make it easier for people to attend. It will be in the PTA room from 7:45 to 8:45 am on Wednesday 12/11 and 12/18 to answer questions and to help people get started.

Pajama Flashlight Party!

Hello Caraway Families,

Next Tuesday night we will be holding our first Pajama Flashlight Literacy Night in the Caraway Library from 6:00-7:30 pm!

Here's how it works: you and your family can come and go any time between 6:00 and 7:30 pm next Tuesday, November 19th in the Caraway Library.

We will have all the lights off in the library and the tables moved aside so everyone can relax and read by flashlight!  While we may have a few larger groups reading together, our hope is that we will have little family/friend groups spread out reading all over the library at the same time.

You may dress in pajamas or bring stuffed animals/pillows if you'd like but the only thing you really need is a flashlight and a love for reading!

You may bring favorite books from home or we will have library books pulled and placed on the tables that you may choose to read.

The goal of this literacy night is to build community around literacy and to remind ourselves and our students that READING IS FUN!

See you there!

Watch DOGS

The WatchDOGS program is an important part of our school and we're looking for more dads (or step-dads, uncles, grand-dads or older brothers) to be part of this awesome program.   The WatchDOGS dads at Caraway help keep the school safe and provide a positive and active role-model for all students at our school.  Its a great way to get a glimpse of their students' everyday world during school hours and is an EXTREMELY rewarding experience.

The typical WatchDOGS volunteer day will be spent in the kids classrooms, help around the office and library, help monitor lunch and recess and just be a positive male presence in the school.  If you choose to come at the beginning of the day - you and your child will be on the morning KOWL news as well (the kids love being on the news with their dads).

We don't require a huge commitment - come when you can!  An hour or two, a half-day, a full day - whatever works with your schedule.

I bet if you ask your child "Do you want me to be a WatchDOG dad at school?" - the answer will be "Yes….PLEEEEEEEEESE DAD!!!!!"

Please email our Top Dog - bruce.kornfeld@gmail.com or call him at 512-934-1686 to get set up to be part of the WatchDOGS program.

Cafeteria Volunteers

CAFETERIA MONITOR VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION!
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12, 2013
8-8:20am

CARAWAY CAFETERIA ANNEX

Help is needed in the cafeteria at lunchtime! This is an excellent opportunity for parents who do not want a long-term volunteer commitment. At Kathy Caraway, we have a unique program that gives the children two recess periods. During lunchtime, one parent volunteer assists the children in the cafeteria and one helps out on the playground. Without parent volunteers, the children will not get a second, lunchtime recess!  When children have more breaks, they come back to class more able to focus on their schoolwork.
Please join us for this brief orientation detailing how you can participate as a cafeteria monitor volunteer!
Can’t make it but still want to volunteer?  Please email Nicole Dockrey atnicole.dockrey@gmail.com for more information.

Education Go Get It Week!

During the week of September 23-27, we will be promoting education by celebrating and learning during "Education Go Get It Week".  Please partner with us by encouraging your children to dress in the following ways:

Monday, Sept. 23:  "Give a Hoot/ College Bound":  Students and teachers wear Kathy Caraway school t-shirts.

Tuesday, Sept. 24:  "Dress for Success":  Students dress up in career outfits or as if they are going for an interview.

Wednesday, Sept. 25:  "Step up for Education":  Students and teachers wear sneakers or tennis shoes.

Thursday, Sept. 26:  "Hats off to College":  Students and teachers wear their favorite collegiate hat.

Friday, Sept. 27:  "Show Your College Spirit":  Students and teachers wear their favorite collegiate t-shirt.

You can also help us by having discussions with your children about where you went to school and what it took for you to get there.  They're never too young to start talking about what they want to do in the future and what type of education it takes to perform this job.  Although their possible career interests will probably change many times throughout their childhood, it's a great discussion to continue!
